Collaboration: Downtown San Luis Obispo Portraits

Last year I met another amazing photographer in the central coast, Samantha. I got to second shoot for her at a wedding and we started talking how we both needed some new photos for our website. We came up with the great idea that we could do a photo shoot of each other. Well from that point we talked and tried to set a date but as wedding season approached, we both were so busy and could never find a date that worked good for us. Then magically a day finally came across.

Samantha has a lot of roles in life, she is a wife, a mom of three adorable boys and she is quite the entrepreneur. She is a wedding planner and owner of Memory Making Events and Design, photographer with her business is Samantha Josette Photography and most recently opening another business; Saúde Mobile Bar. Can you say GIRL BOSS?! She is incredibly busy but everything she does, she puts her 110% in it. She is such a caring, sweet and amazing woman and it was such a fun time photographing each other downtown San Luis Obispo.

I can’t express how it important it is, to be friends with your associates rather than think of them as competition. Here in San Luis Obispo, or wedding industry really shines through as a team as always coming together, supporting each other and having fun. I get so much inspiration from being around other photographers and other wedding vendors in our area. If you aren’t already involved in your own community, I challenge you to reach out to someone! Even if it’s a coffee date to talk about something outside of your profession, or talk about the challenges within your business that you face.

Next week I will share the AMAZING pictures that Samantha captured of me that truly represent my personality. Stay tuned ;)

Los Osos Maternity Session | Leanna & Travis Expecting

Leanna and Travis are going to be amazing parents to a beautiful baby girl. I had so much fun photographing these two before they officially become a family a three.

Rio Seco Engagement / Vanessa and Keith / Paso Robles Engagement

Crazy winds engagement at Rio Seco

A few months ago I had a booth at the Paso Robles Inn Bridal show. It was the first time that I participated in this show since I usually do the Madonna Inn show. I prefer the Paso show, it is more intimate and not as many vendors, as the Madonna Inn show is bombarded with vendors and seems to be overwhelming to many of the brides that attend. For this Paso Show, the Inn raffled off something from each booth. Instead of making a cute gift basket, I wanted to give something that allowed me to connect with whoever won it, so I donated an engagement session. As the show went on through the day, winners were called every fifteen minutes. In the last minutes of the show, my engagement session wasn’t called off for a winner yet, then I finally heard who won! The couples came over to introduce themselves; Vanessa and Keith. They were so excited they had won a free engagement session with me and as we were exchanging information their names were called again!! They had won a DJ package with the booth next to me (I want some of their luck!).

Over the next few weeks Vanessa and I emailed back and fourth planning their engagement session. We decided to do their engagement session at their wedding venue, Rio Seco Winery and Vineyard in Paso Robles The first time we scheduled, we had to cancel the day before since the forecast was 98% rain and of course that day ended up being 100% dry and sunny. We were finally able to reschedule and the day was extremely windy but that doesn’t stop me! Vanessa and Keith was such a fun couple to photograph, they are filled with laughs, fun and excitement. Even though the wind was hurricane status, we all made the best of it and had a great time.

I can’t wait to capture their wedding in October and capture more of their fun personalities!

Matt & Jessica: Dolphin Bay Resort Wedding – Pismo Beach Wedding

This was my first wedding second shooting for Stefanie (owner of Stefanie Elizabeth photography). Stefanie found me through our local photographer group on Facebook. We met in the parking lot before the wedding making a game plan then headed up to the bridal sweet at Dolphin Bay Resort. I started with the details: bouquets (which were so gorgeous!), rings, bridal jewelry, the dress and more. We both photographed Jessica getting ready then went down to where the ceremony took place overlooking the ocean. It was a super windy that particular day and miraculously stopped just in time for the ceremony. When the ceremony was over, Matt and Jessica walked down the isle as a newly married couple to a Starwars song. Stefanie and I then had some time to do bride and groom portraits around the resort. There are so many good locations on the property from the lobby of the resort, to a small tucked away path by the pool that made it look like we were in Hawaii!

Stefanie and I then headed to the reception at the Radisson in Santa Maria. I was going to follow her since I didn’t know where it was. I followed her white car off the freeway then the car that I thought was hers started going into a neighborhood and I quickly realized I somehow started following a different white car and Stefanie was then behind me. I have no idea how that happened! Once we got to the reception we had some time to kill as guests were still arriving so we were able to download some of the pictures from the day and get a head start on editing. It was so awesome a time to relax a little. After the guests had arrived, Matt and Jessica did their first dance then rest of the night was a party!

Jodi and Joey’s Wedding – Thousand Hills Ranch: San Luis Obispo Wedding

I had such a great time second shooting for Samantha Ward, owner of Memory Making Events. She is an event planner and a photographer and her husband does videography. Sam has the greatest personality and is such a fun person to be around!

The wedding day didn’t start out so well for Jodi and Joey. It was any brides worst nightmare…. RAIN! And of course they had a ceremony planned outside on the grass by the Oak tree. Thankfully the wedding party and vendors made a quick change to the set up, making a gorgeous indoor ceremony in the barn. All the ladies walked down the stairs then down the aisle. The barn at thousand hills ranch is unique due to one side of it being completely open. So Sam and I were able to do formals inside but right on the edge of the building so they look like they were done outside. The rain stopped a little bit for us to actually take Jodi and Joey outside for some portraits of just the two of them. BTW brides - Overcast and cloudy are a lot better for lighting than mid day high sun, so its not all bad when it is not ideal weather on your wedding day.

The wedding party and guests were such a fun group! They were dressing up in the photo booth accessories and dancing on the dance floor in them. They also started a dance off dancing on top of wine barrels and chairs. But that wasn’t all the excitement, Jodi and Joey had an interesting tradition; The man who caught the garter had to put it on the woman who caught the bouquet…using no hands. Talk about the most awkward and funniest thing I have ever seen, also “the higher the garter, the more luck for the newly weds”. I’m sure they were at least a little bit tipsy, so I’m sure that helped but everyone was dying of laughter. After some more dancing I really wanted to get a picture of Jodi and Joey outside in the rain and in the dark, and they were up for it! I placed a flash behind them and as it fired it froze the rain in the picture and looked just fantastic! It is one of my favorite photos!! So I’m excited for more weddings in the rain, it is supposed to be good luck anyways, right? ;)

Sarah and Jimmy: Edwards Barn Wedding – Nipomo Wedding

I love when I get to photograph the couple’s engagement and wedding. I got to photograph both Sarah and Jimmy’s engagement and wedding. We did their engagement pictures at the same location of their wedding, at Edwards Barn in Nipomo. During the engagement session I got to know Sarah and Jimmy. Throughout the session there was a barn cat following us wanting to be in the pictures (I love cats so this was not an issue for me). From having the engagement pictures at the wedding venue we got to vision what the wedding day would look like. From that day, May seemed SO far away but the months flew by and the wedding day came up quick!

I showed up the barn and started photographing my favorite things, the details! Chelsea from Blissful Blossoms was the florist and did an excellent job on the flowers. The colors of all the flowers were perfect for this spring wedding and on top of it they smelled fantastic. Sarah and Jimmy’s wedding a party was a little different from I am use to. She included her best friend and brother and he included his best friend and sister. So the girls got ready with each other and the boys got ready with each other but then at the ceremony when they got to the alter, Jimmy’s sister stood on his side and Sarah’s brother stood on her side. What a unique and cute idea! After the ceremony we managed to get all of the wedding guests in front of the barn for a big group photo. I was surprised on how quickly this could be accomplished; usually it is like herding cats to get that many people together and stay put for a picture.

The whole day went by stress free and perfect as could be. To end the great day all the guests got handfuls of rose petals and threw them in the air as the newly wed couple walked out. Since it was still light out after the reception Sarah, Jimmy and I went to Avila Beach on the cliffs and take a few sunset pictures and it was the perfect ending to a marvelous wedding.

Flying Caballos Ranch Wedding / Jeff and Jocelyn / San Luis Obispo Wedding Photographer

One great thing about Facebook is the way you can reach out to anyone. In February I got to second shoot for Taylor K photography, from Southern California.

Everything was beautiful about this wedding at Flying Caballos Ranch  I showed up to the venue and started on the details of the day: the bride, Jocelyn’s gorgeous jewelry made by a friend, her grandmother’s brooch that she pinned onto her bouquet, the adorable wedding favor tiles that the Jocelyn hand made, the hand made center piece boxes that held the flowers with J&J branded into the wood, the California drought friendly succulent cake and other numerous gorgeous details. Then I headed up to the honeymoon suite in the water tower where the guys got ready. They all took a shot of Jack Daniels, and Jeff was then ready for a first look at his soon to be bride. When they saw each other it was adorable on how excited and anxious they both were. With the first look done, family portraits were able to get done before the ceremony, making things very easy. Jeff and Jocelyn even had some time to just sit and relax as guests showed up before the ceremony. Once the ceremony was over, Jocelyn and Jeff were ready to celebrate and party with all of their guests. The DJ (Kramer Events: had everyone dancing the night away from the start of cocktail hour. During sunset, Taylor and I were able to steal the bride and groom for a few minutes to take some pictures out in the field. With the gorgeous views and the incredibly photogenic bride and groom, the pictures are extremely beautiful.
