Collaboration: Downtown San Luis Obispo Portraits

Last year I met another amazing photographer in the central coast, Samantha. I got to second shoot for her at a wedding and we started talking how we both needed some new photos for our website. We came up with the great idea that we could do a photo shoot of each other. Well from that point we talked and tried to set a date but as wedding season approached, we both were so busy and could never find a date that worked good for us. Then magically a day finally came across.

Samantha has a lot of roles in life, she is a wife, a mom of three adorable boys and she is quite the entrepreneur. She is a wedding planner and owner of Memory Making Events and Design, photographer with her business is Samantha Josette Photography and most recently opening another business; Saúde Mobile Bar. Can you say GIRL BOSS?! She is incredibly busy but everything she does, she puts her 110% in it. She is such a caring, sweet and amazing woman and it was such a fun time photographing each other downtown San Luis Obispo.

I can’t express how it important it is, to be friends with your associates rather than think of them as competition. Here in San Luis Obispo, or wedding industry really shines through as a team as always coming together, supporting each other and having fun. I get so much inspiration from being around other photographers and other wedding vendors in our area. If you aren’t already involved in your own community, I challenge you to reach out to someone! Even if it’s a coffee date to talk about something outside of your profession, or talk about the challenges within your business that you face.

Next week I will share the AMAZING pictures that Samantha captured of me that truly represent my personality. Stay tuned ;)

South Lake Tahoe Family Portraits

During my amazing time to go home to South Lake Tahoe, I had the privilege to spend an evening photographing the Gilpin family! Jackie contacted during my time in Tahoe to capture the whole family together as there was a short time that all the kids were all together. The Gilpins are such a sweet and fun family. It is so important to have photographs as kids are growing.

I love how in all the images each of their playful and loving personalities shines through. Lucas andThank you for letting my capture your family. Here’s some images from our time together at the Tahoe Keys beach…

Will you marry me?

I love, love! So when Josh contacted me to photograph his proposal to his girlfriend Olga, I could not resist! We only had a few days to plan this magical moment so we had to think fast. I knew that Montana De Oro would be a great spot for this to happen; it’s a beach that normally isn’t very crowded like how Pismo or Avila beach can get. I planned my outfit to be causal but also be very noticeable so that Josh could see who I was on the beach. I wore a neon yellow sweatshirt that has sequins all over the back, I would be extremely surprised if I saw anyone wearing anything close to what I described. My boyfriend Casey came along with me to the beach that night. We sat down on the sand and watched as Josh and Olga arrive and meander along the sand. I was getting anxious and nervous just watching them with anticipation. I pretend to take pictures of Casey and the water when I was zooming in on the soon to be engaged couple. After some time, the sun started to go down and Josh went down on one knee to pop the question. I ran up as fast as I could photograph every moment of it. They kissed then the people on the beach cheered just like a movie. I introduced myself and congratulated them then started posing them for some pictures. Casey walked around the beach and scouted an awesome spot for more picture. We walked up on the rocks that were above the water and with flash I could capture some of the water splashing up against rocks. Of course I was terrified of a huge wave coming up and taking my camera and I down into the ocean, thankfully that could happen. To finish off the night we went into this little cave (another great spot Casey found), I put my flash behind Josh and Olga and it lit up the cave around them, it was truly stunning!

Proposals are such a special moment and I am so honored that I get to be part them and capture the start of a new wonderful stage in life together.

Marilyn Monroe Styled Shoot

I am currently a student at Cal Poly working on my Bachelors of Fine Art with concentration in photography. Talk about a lot of work! One of my assignments in my portrait photography class was to recreate an iconic person. I had to find someone and make him or her look like the iconic person’s doppelgänger. Last year I did a photo that looked like Twiggy, so this made me think of Marilyn Monroe, she is such a beautiful and iconic woman. My GORGEOUS friend Kali would be the best model for this, and thankfully she agreed! One of the shots I wanted to do was the Marilyn sitting in a chair with a big white tutu on. I had only a few days to get props ready and my only choice was to make the tutu myself.

I went downtown to the fabric store in town, Beverly’s and bought three yards of white tulle, one yard of white slip material and elastic. I am nowhere near being good at sewing but I was determined to make the skirt work. Problems I ran into: 1). I didn’t buy enough tulle material, so I didn’t have the amount of layers in the skirt that I wanted. 2). Tulle is the hardest thing to line up straight and 3). I sewed the material to the elastic wrong so it didn’t stretch at all. When it came to shooting, the skirt was so small we had to cut and rip it for it to even be wearable.

Kali did her own hair and makeup and matched it perfectly to Marilyn Monroe. The photos have the vintage look but a modern touch to them. After shooting the tutu pictures I wanted to do a similar photo to Marilyn’s white dress blowing. Of course living in San Luis Obispo there are no subway grate however a fan worked just fine. Thank you for being a fantastic model Kali!
